Series 400 Intercooler
THIS INTERCOOLER IS SERIOUS BUSINESS. See pictures at right of a 300 series core in a Type 04 configuration fitted to the front of a New Beetle. The 300 series is the same as the 400 series only 20mm thinner, so it is likely the front bumper opening would have been trimmed further to fit a 400 series on this car.
Forced induction (compression of inlet air) produces heat. Heat can reduce power thus negating some of the benefits of forced induction in the first place.
Incorporating an intercooler between the compressor and the plenum chamber greatly reduces the adverse effects of elevated air inlet temperatures.
