The Forge FMDV004 Dual Piston Ram Dump Valve
A diverter/compressor bypass/blow off valve should be part of any intercooled turbo system, especially if they are making more than 4 or 5 pounds of boost. While many people buy valves because of the sound they make, they also serve a functional purpose as well. When you are at load and the turbo is building boost then you let off the throttle, the pressurized air column encounters the closed throttle plate and like a ball hitting the floor, it bounces back towards the turbocharger. When this column of air reaches the turbocharger it bounces back to the throttle plate. This can actually be very violent and cause the vehicle to "trailer hitch" at part throttle cruising. Trailer hitching is a jerking of the vehicle, called such because it feels like a trailer is behind the vehicle jerking it about. Not a pleasent situation.
Another reason for a diverter valve is because that air column that travels back to the turbocharger creates a significant load on the compressor and turbine parts as this pulsating force tries to stop the wheels. People have actually broken the shaft in the turbo because of this!
Finally diverter valves are good for performance, since between shifts the release of pressure in the intercooler piping allows the turbo to stay spinning. Without one, the turbo loses a significant amount of speed each time you shift gears, requiring it to spool back up.
